Moving AXON Networks from Java to Go

Director of Engineering & AI (EMEA) · 2023-Present

Context

AXON Networks’ platform runs latency-sensitive services where predictable performance matters, and Go fits that better than Java while being simpler to maintain. Moving a language across an organisation is not a rewrite, though, it is a change of habit for every team, so it needed to be led as a transition rather than mandated.

What I did

I built up a team to lead the move from Java to Go, starting with the services that needed predictable performance. To bring the rest of the organisation along I provided training and guides so teams could start building Go services themselves instead of waiting for a central group, treating the shift as change management rather than a one-off migration.

Outcome

AXON Networks moved its performance-sensitive services to Go and gave the wider organisation the training and guides to keep building in Go, so the change held as a new default rather than a single project.
